After four years of uncertainty surrounding the disappearance of Suzanne Morphew, authorities in Colorado have revealed that her death was ruled a homicide. Morphew, a mother of two, vanished after going on a bike ride on Mother’s Day in 2020, and her remains were discovered more than three years later in September 2023.
The cause of death was disclosed in an autopsy report by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), stating that Morphew’s death was attributed to “Homicide by undetermined means in the setting of butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine intoxication.”
CBI Director Chris Schaefer emphasized the ongoing commitment to pursue justice for Morphew, stating, “The investigative team assembled to work this case continues to follow the evidence and only the evidence as we seek justice for Suzanne’s death.”
The combination of butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine, as described by the National Institutes of Health, is utilized as an immobilization protocol for bears due to its effectiveness and safety.
Morphew’s disappearance sparked a massive investigation, with authorities conducting numerous searches and interviews across multiple states. However, until the discovery of her remains, the circumstances surrounding her disappearance remained elusive.
The tragic turn of events unfolded in September 2023 when her remains were found in Saguache County, about 40 miles from where she was last seen. This discovery coincided with a search for another missing person, Edna Quintana, further underscoring the complexities of the case.
While Morphew’s husband, Barry Morphew, was initially charged with murder, the charges were later dropped without prejudice due to procedural issues. This decision left room for potential future prosecution.
